Moving our monthly spotlight across the country, we’re taking a closer look at our regional team in East Anglia throughout June.
From fixing lifts in Luton to modernising non-compliances in Norwich, our engineers are on hand to keep your operations moving smoothly.
With 15 years’ experience in the lift industry, trained in accountancy with a hobby of weightlifting in her youth, our East Anglia Regional Manager Julie Greyling can not only balance the books but the barbell too.
Originally from Huddersfield, Julie Greyling and her family moved to Africa at a very young age. She earned an education in accountancy and ran a successful lift company in South Africa for three years.
After moving back to the UK, she soon brought her hands-on experience and strong understanding of lift operations and business management to Pickerings in 2018. Julie was promoted from Repairs Manager to Regional Manager and now looks after our East Anglia region.
Julie said: “I quickly discovered that the lift industry offers a unique and dynamic working environment. Every day brings new challenges and opportunities—there’s never a dull moment, and once you're in, it's an industry that's hard to leave.”
Outside of work, when she’s not at the gym or paddleboarding, Julie doesn’t let the British weather stop her from enjoying a Braai (the South African term for a BBQ).
When our DIY retail client needed to upgrade their lift, the renovation experts knew exactly who to call…
The staff lift at their Stevenage store was 18 years old and starting to show its age, so it was out with the old and in with the new.
Our East Anglia Engineer Adam and Apprentice Kayne expertly installed an energy efficient HydroElite package with brand new:
The installation was delivered on time and within budget; every aspect of the lift was cleaned down and in perfect condition upon completion.
A renovation project our DIY retail client would be proud of!
Our East Anglia team always aims to keep our customers happy so it’s reassuring and motivating to hear positive feedback from our clients.
We’re delighted to be meeting the demands of our varied clients and satisfying our customers:
‘Checkout’ our handiwork for our supermarket client…
Staying in East Anglia, our Loading Systems team has been busy across the region with some recent installs for a well-known supermarket chain.
We replaced a dock leveller at a store in Witham, Essex allowing deliveries to be safely and easily transferred from the lorry trailer into the warehouse.
We then upgraded delivery access to another store in Norwich by replacing their foam dock seals. This allows lorries to reverse up tight to the doorway, protecting goods from weather, prevent draughts and block access to any potential pests.
Kayne is currently training as an apprentice engineer in our East Anglia region. He loves getting his hands on various different equipment and building his practical knowledge, whilst providing solutions for customers on live lifts that are critical to their operations.
Kayne said: “I enjoy working with my hands and taking things apart in order to see how they work, then putting them all back together. The pleasure in repairing and placing the lift back in service makes you feel like you have achieved a great goal.”
His three-and-a-half-year course is delivered by Elevated Knowledge. One day a month Kayne completes online training courses and the rest of the time he is out with one of our qualified engineers where he is learning and helping to service and repair customer’s lifts.
Kayne added: “I enjoy travelling to different sites, working with all different kinds of lifts, and learning from all the engineers in the East Anglia area as they teach me how to problem solve and repair the lifts.”
Kayne has no exams to complete – he just has to write up assessments with photos evidencing that he has carried out the repairs. He is set to complete his apprenticeship towards the end of 2027 and is looking forward to becoming a qualified NVQ3 lift engineer.
All the best Kayne!
To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day today and continue this month’s focus on East Anglia we met up with our lift engineer Kate
Kate said: “When I finished college, I decided I did not want to work in an office and I thought I'd look into engineering careers. When I was invited to the engineering job assessments, I found it to be male dominated with no other females applying but I finally got offered a role as an apprentice lift engineer.
“Later on, I joined Pickerings who were very welcoming; everyone has been very helpful and friendly.
“Customers are always pleasantly surprised that Pickerings has a female engineer. I get lots of words of encouragement and praise from customers.
“I hope to inspire future female engineers.”
International Women in Engineering Day plays a vital role in encouraging more young women and girls to take up engineering careers.
We’re proud to have Kate on the Pickerings team!
After featuring our lift engineer Kate to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, it was lovely to hear praise for her from one of our customers.
When an urgent call was made at an NHS site in St Albans, Kate was on site in 15 minutes and had the problem fixed within another 30 minutes.
It was really important that the lift wasn’t out of action for long as a mobility impaired lady works on the first floor and the accessible toilet is on the ground floor.
Our client was delighted with Kate’s service, saying: “Every time I’ve reported a lift fault she has got here within half an hour max of my call. Today she exceeded all previous visits!
“She’s such a friendly and professional young lady. She investigated and fixed the issue within around 30 mins and always comes to Reception to explain what the problem was.
“You honestly couldn’t ask for anything more”
We said it before and we’ll say it again; we’re proud to have Kate on the Pickerings team!
