Throughout October, we took a closer look at our Escalators team who maintain, repair, refurbish and install escalators, travelators and conveyers nationwide. Based at our head office in Stockton-on-Tees, we have engineers operating across the UK with spare parts available at each of our 15 regional offices.
Becky has progressed through the business during her nine years at Pickerings, joining us as a National Accounts Administrator and developing into her current role as Escalator Operations Manager.
Becky loves working with customers, engineers, colleagues and suppliers to keep clients’ escalators moving across the country.
Outside of work, Becky loves giving it her all on karaoke, having once won a competition after her Kelis cover brought all the boys to the yard!
Our national supermarket client was delighted with the refurbishment we completed for two of their travelators at their store in Lincoln:
“Please pass on my thanks to the broader team for the delivery of this project. I know you understood my nervousness ahead of delivery as it was the first travellator modernisation being delivered. It went really well and the feedback I have had has been very positive. Your weekly updates have been really clear and communication amongst stakeholders has been brilliant.”
The job required a complete overhaul of the existing set up, as outlined below, so it’s wonderful to hear such positive feedback.
Escalators Repair Supervisor Nicole takes great satisfaction ensuring operations run smoothly for our clients.
Whether it’s quoting jobs, scheduling repairs or coordinating specialist works with suppliers she pulls out all stops to get the job done.
She has a menagerie of pets at home; two dogs, two cats, one hamster and three Giant African Land Snails. If she can handle feeding time at the zoo, she can handle anything!
We’ve installed a new comb plate on an escalator in a retail store in Chelmsford, Essex after wear and tear had led to a few broken teeth.
The comb plate sits at the entrance and exit of an escalator, providing a smooth transition for passengers getting on or off.
The teeth prevent objects or clothing from getting caught between the steps, thereby reducing the risk of entrapment or injury. It pays to take care of your teeth.
Leah is currently studying for an apprenticeship in Business Administration, supporting the Escalators team with various tasks.
She spends the majority of her course, delivered by Stockton Riverside College, gaining experience and developing her skills in a rewarding role where she gets to make a significant contribution to the business.
Leah is looking forward to completing her 18-month course and hopes to climb the career ladder (or employment escalator) with Pickerings.
As pictured, Leah is a big fan of ducks and has collected a flock load of yellow friends.
Our Escalator engineers have been busy installing new travelator pallets and skirting brushes at a supermarket in Ashford, Kent.
Travelator pallets are much like the steps of an escalator but are completely flat. They are connected end to end to form an interlocked continuous platform that carries a person from entry to exit of the walkway. The skirting brush is a safety and cleaning component installed along both sides of the walkway.
It prevents debris from getting into the moving parts of the machine and discourages passengers from inserting fingers or objects into any gaps.
Our Apprentice Escalator Engineer Charlie is following in the rising steps of his escalator engineering family.
He has always been interested in how things work, especially mechanical and electrical equipment, and he didn’t want to go down the full-time college route. It felt like the natural step to follow his dad, grandad and uncles into the escalator industry.
Charlie said: “I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship so far. There’s a good mix of hands-on work and learning, and I like that every day’s a bit different. It’s interesting seeing how everything comes together to keep escalators running safely; there’s a lot more to it than you’d expect.”
