Our engineer visits Salford Lads Club

National Coverage, Local Knowledge

Each month, we’ve been shining the spotlight on one of our 15 regional offices. From installing lift autodiallers up in Edinburgh to fixing defective drives down in Devizes it’s been wonderful showcasing the great work we’re carrying out nationwide.

It has also given us the opportunity to get to know our colleagues across the country. As well as learning about their expertise and experience we also found out about their personal lives – from featuring in motoring magazines and weightlifting to serving in the forces across the globe and marathon running. We even got to meet Escalators Repair Supervisor Nicole’s pet snail Gary!

One of the highlights was visiting Salford Lads and Girls Club. The iconic Grade-II listed building featured in The Smiths’ album art for The Queen is Dead. The recreational club attracts fans of Manchester’s music scene from across the world and we’re proud to maintain their lifts.

Catch up on all of our regional focuses in our News & Blogs section.

Positive feedback for our engineer Paul

Delivering Top Service

😊 “I can’t fault the communication and the maintenance and repair work.”

👍🏻 “It’s reassuring to have a partner like Pickerings that we can trust.”

🥇 “Top service by you and your team today to turn this around so quickly!”

This is just some of the positive feedback we’ve received from our customers over the past year. We’ve showcased full lift installations, loading bay repairs and escalator upgrades, and it’s wonderful hearing how happy our clients have been with the work we’ve carried out.

Our original office in Stockon-On-Tees

Professional Engineering Since 1854

This year we celebrated our 171st birthday!

We love unearthing our past; earlier this year found an old lift from the 1930s that is rumoured to have led to an illegal casino in the basement.

We also modernised a Pickerings traction motor from the 1960s that was still working – testament to the quality of our products!

We even helped piece an ancestor’s story together when a woman from New Zealand got in touch to help trace her family’s history. An old census showed that her grandfather worked as an apprentice draughtsman with Pickerings in 1921.

From Jonathan Pickering manufacturing pulley blocks and hoisting equipment in 1854 up to becoming UK's leading independent lift service company we are extremely proud of our heritage.

Insight from our Apprentice Kayne

Investing in Our Future

With over 170 years of history of behind us, we’re not resting on our laurels and always looking ahead to ensure success for many years ahead.

We are currently training 23 apprentices, from engineering to business administration roles, providing practical experience alongside academic learning to set them up for success in their careers.

We engage with students at careers fairs we’ve attended this year, providing advice and showcasing what a job at Pickerings can offer.

We also welcomed a number of placement students into the business over the summer, providing valuable work experience and insights into the lift industry and a professional work environment.

Setting the next generation up for success!

Our engineers receive product training

Keeping Our Skills Sharp

Developing our staff and ensuring our teams are capable and confident is a key priority for us.

We have delivered over 500 training opportunities this year, with safety at the forefront of everything that we do. These range from practical engineering courses and safety training to product understanding and leadership development. We encourage colleagues to request training and we always look to support their development where we can.

We’ve invested in our training facilities this year, introducing new Mobility and Loading Systems equipment to go alongside our training lifts. We’re also in the process of installing an escalator at our Head Offices. These facilities allow our engineers to undergo regular, hands-on training to ensure their skills are sharp and they know how to stay safe.

We agreed a partnership with Daisy Chain in June

Partnering with Daisy Chain

In June, we partnered with Daisy Chain to provide sponsorship and support to the charity that helps autistic and neurodivergent people, and their families.

We have since raised funds by taking part in a Viking boat race, Tough Mudder Challenge, the Great North Run and a fancy dress day for Halloween.

We’ve also donated clothes, toys and other items to their charity stores and raised over £1,000 from our Christmas raffle!

Our partnership has provided a lot of fun and more importantly funds for such a good cause.

We held a cake sale for Prostate Cancer UK

Supporting Our Communities

We take great pride in giving back to our communities. As well as our partnership with Daisy Chain, we’ve provided support and donations for a number of great causes throughout the year.

We’ve held bake sales and raffles to raise funds for cancer charities, donated Easter eggs to schools and disability support centres, provided food and supplies to Food Banks and a pet rescue centre, and volunteered our time to paint a scouts hall.

Throughout the festive period our Pickerings elves were busy spreading the joy and making it a very special Christmas for some really worthy causes.

We are fortunate to be in a position to dedicate time and resources to support charities and organisations and we look forward to giving back to our communities and helping make a difference wherever we can in 2026.

We wore green to support Mental Health Awareness Day

Taking Mental Health Seriously

By promoting wellbeing, reducing stigma and working alongside mental health professionals we aim to foster an inclusive and supportive environment.

For Mental Health Awareness Week in May, colleagues wore green to bring the topic to light as we promoted the support available.

Following training in July, we now have 17 fully-qualified Mental Health First Aid Trainers across different regions of our business. They act as the first point of contact for any colleague experiencing a mental health issue, providing initial support and signposting to additional help as required.

We also offer an Employee Assistance Programme which provides colleagues with support and resources for personal and work-related challenges like mental health, financial, legal, and family issues.

Last Christmas we held a prize raffle, raising over £1,000 for Andy’s Man Club.

Our Digital Transition & IoT Manager Jamie plays for Guiseley AFC

Being a Good Sport

We’re proud to have sponsored professional teams and supported local sporting clubs this year.

It’s been wonderful seeing our Pickerings logo on the home shirts for Guiseley AFC this season. We also sponsor their midfielder and our very own Digital Transition & IoT Manager Jamie’s home, away and training kits.

It was an honour to sponsor the inaugural Welsh Wheelchair Open at Rhiwbina Squash Club in Cardiff, supporting Squash Wales mission to make the sport more inclusive and accessible.

We supplied Thornaby Badminton Club with T-shirts for members to wear. The club brings the community together, providing an opportunity to keep fit, socialise or take part competitively in the Tees Active Badminton League and Darlington League.

And it was a delight seeing our ads on the pitch-side boards at the Hull FC’s MKM Stadium.

Service Director Gary Rains wishes Dennis a happy retirement

Celebrating Our Colleagues

We love to celebrate the success and dedication of our colleagues.

Each quarter, we recognise an engineer and member of staff as our Above & Beyond awardees, having delivered exceptional service. From charity work and out-of-hours IT support, to using public transport after a traffic accident to complete maintenance and repair visits, we’re blown away by the dedication of our colleagues. Well done to our winners throughout the year; Phil, Michael, Nicole, Graham, Alan, Andrew and Jack.

We marked the milestones of long-serving colleagues including North East Lift Engineer Bill’s 25 years, North West Service Administrator Julie’s 25 years and East Anglia Lift Engineer Vaughan’s incredible 45 years!

With a combined 55 years of service between them, we were sad to say goodbye to Buyer Dennis and Contract Administrator Jackie. We wish them both well in their well-earned retirement.
