In celebration of World FM Day on 15 May, we’re taking a look at the unsung heroes of facilities management. What is facilities management and what do facilities managers do?
Once a year, the global facilities management community comes together to celebrate World FM Day, to recognise the vital work that facilities management professionals do.
So, what is facilities management and why is it so important?
Facilities management, often shortened to FM, is the management of all services that support the core business of an organisation.
There are a wide range of services that FM can provide:
- Hard services: These relate to the physical part of the building and include heating, plumbing, electrics and preventive building maintenance
- Soft services: These relate to services used by people in the building and include cleaning, grounds maintenance, catering, reception services and decorating
Some services may be both hard and soft, for example, security where you are not only securing the building but also employing security staff.
If you own a company and have a large building, or several buildings across a wide area, rather than look after these services yourself, you may elect to outsource them out to an FM company to save time and money, and enable you to run your business more efficiently.
Facilities management is a growing sector. According to MTW Research, FM outsourcing across the UK will grow by £2 billion in 2019!
An FM company will not only ensure a high quality service, but ensure that people in your building are kept safe and that you as an organisation are legally compliant, in line with the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations.
FM companies work with a wide range of organisations including hospitals, schools, councils, prisons, business parks, stadiums and retailers.
At Pickerings Lifts, we work with a wide range of FM companies to help them look after their customers’ lifts, escalators, mobility aids and loading systems products, wherever they are across the country.
We would like to say thank you for all the hard work that FM companies undertake behind the scenes to ensure businesses across the country run smoothly, not just on World FM Day, but every other day too!
