What is a wicket gate?
A wicket gate (sometimes referred to as a wicket door) is quite simply, a small door or gate within a larger door or gate that people are able to pass through.
In the olden days, wicket gates were commonly found in castles so that guards could keep the castle secure and avoid having to lower the drawbridge for just one or two visitors.
More recently, wicket gates have become common in factories and distribution centres where they enable staff to enter and leave a building without having to repeatedly open the larger door, saving time and avoiding disruptions in temperature.
If you’re a cricket fan, you might be asking ‘what came first? Wickets or wicket gates?’
The reason a wicket is named as it is is because originally a wicket only consisted of two stumps and looked a little bit like a gate. Even when the third stump was introduced in the eighteenth century, the name stuck!
