National Apprenticeship Week 2022
We are delighted to celebrate our apprentices, during National Apprenticeship Week 2022, by introducing you to our newly-appointed apprentices, looking at our past apprentices and celebrating with those who have passed!
Apprentices are an important and valuable part of our ongoing strategy to future proof our workforce.
We caught up with James Heaton-Jones at Head Office in Stockton-on-Tees. James is our Digital Marketing Apprentice. He joined us in August last year.
“Hello, I am working towards Level 3 in Digital Marketing. I am currently building my portfolio with evidence I have collated during my time already here at Pickerings Lifts.
I will be sitting my first exam soon. Over the course of my apprenticeship, I will sit four exams and continue to build my portfolio. What’s great is I can earn while I learn!”
“I have been in the marketing department for over six months now. Every day is different, which I really enjoy!”
“I was an accountancy apprentice before I started my apprenticeship for Pickerings Lifts,
I fancied changing my career path and I am very glad I did – I have some excellent mentors that are helping me through my apprenticeship and I am learning more about the role every day!”
“First thing I do on a morning is check my emails, I plan, create and schedule social media posts on all four of the social media platforms we use.
I create job vacancies for HR that are sent out internally and externally. One of my favourite duties is managing and restocking the promotional items.”
“I was set the task of creating a booklet for a HR careers event at a local school. I designed the booklet and arranged the marketing materials required for the event.
The booklet was put into a goodie bag with branded items such as pens, sweets, keyrings and hand sanitiser, which I put together for the HR team.”
“The most memorable experience was helping with the grand Christmas prize draw. All the gifts received from our suppliers were in the draw and staff bought entries.
All the money raised from the entries was donated to a very worthy charity, the NSPCC – which was chosen by our staff.”
“Luckily for me, my classes are online. I have a day release from work every two weeks and I am finding a good balance between my on-the-job training and studies.
I have been enjoying the lessons so far and have been applying what I have learnt to my job. I feel my confidence is growing.”
“You may find me skateboarding with friends. I am also currently teaching myself how to play the guitar.”
I enjoy watching TV programmes such as Peaky Blinders.”
“A hobby of mine is photography and I enjoy building computers.”
“My all time favourite film is Mid 90’s – it’s about skateboarding [laughs]”
Investing in young people
We view apprenticeships as an investment in young people that will reap dividends for Pickerings Lifts far into the future.
By providing apprentices with the skills and knowledge necessary to work within the lift industry, we are equipping them with a vocation that will help them throughout their lives. At the same time, we’re helping to secure a stable, reliable, and highly-educated workforce, trained in the Pickerings Lifts methods and values.
Pickerings Lifts currently has seven apprentices, and as you might expect with a national company, they’re spread out across the whole of the UK.
Equally, because we install, maintain and repair all types of lifts, and all these activities have to be managed and co-ordinated, so there is scope for a wide range of apprenticeships.
We have apprentices in sales and marketing, central customer operations, lift, maintenance and repair and escalators.
